Beautifully formed
The graceful curves and sleek design belie the complex electronics
within the F50fd’s tough metal exterior. At a depth of only 22.9mm,
it’s a perfect fit for a pocket or handbag and is available in two
classic colours, Silver and Black.
Light gathering pixels Low light - less noise
Highly sensitive
The TIPA and DIMA award-winning FinePix F30 set the standard for low
light photography. The FinePix F50fd builds on this heritage with a
larger than average 1/1.6 inch 12 megapixel Seventh Generation Super
CCD HR sensor and Real Photo Processor II. Together these allow ultra
high-resolution capture with breathtaking detail, even at high ISO
settings.
The newly developed sensor design features several key
improvements that increase the efficiency with which each pixel gathers
light, and an enhanced two-stage noise reduction system ensures that
noise is kept to a minimum without valuable detail being lost.
Despite
doubling the number of pixels, the new sensor offers similar
performance to the groundbreaking FinePix F30 and F31fd at sensitivity
settings up to ISO 3200. For shooting in the very lowest light without
compromising image quality, the FinePix F50fd offers sensitivity modes
of up to ISO 6400 at lower resolutions.
Optical zoom
This new camera features a sharp 3x Fujinon optical zoom lens, (equivalent to 38-110mm on a 35mm camera).
Despite
its compact size, there are no compromises with optical clarity and
speed of operation. The lens is robust, reliable, and delivers sharp
pictures every time.
Fingertip control with our Mode Dial
Ultimate control is at your fingertips with the F50fd’s vertical Mode Dial and streamlined `Graphical User Interface’.
The
intuitive icon based interface confirms shooting modes, scene
positions, or control settings with brief explanations on the LCD
screen. Easy-to-read icon and text description of the selected mode
help you choose and confirm the optimum setting for best results. This
takes much of the guesswork out of digital camera operation. With less
to worry about, you'll have more fun with your picture taking!
High resolution LCD screen
The FinePix F50fd features a large high-resolution 2.7 inch, 230,000
pixel LCD screen, which is coated with Fujifilm's proprietary Wide View
film. This minimises glare and reflections, and also enables consumers
to view the LCD from any angle (even in sunny conditions), to enable
shooting from waist level or above the head, or to make picture
playback to a group so much easier.
 Convenient xD/SD compatibility
The FinePix F50fd features an xD/SD compatible slot, allowing the
use of either xD Picture Card, SD or SDHC media to store and transfer
your photos.
This will give you the flexibility to buy the
card you want, use cards from previous cameras, or choose the media
that fits with your other desktop devices like laptops, PDAs or card
readers.
Internal memory
The FinePix F50fd makes it possible for you to get that picture even
if your memory card is full. The 54MB of internal memory built into
this compact model provides enough storage for up to 88 photographs,
(at 2MP setting), and ensures that you will never have to miss that
special shot.
Think of it as your internal insurance policy
for photo opportunities. With that said, the main storage for images on
the F50fd should be an additional xD card, which will allow you to
accommodate almost as many images as you like.
Captures the face at any angle Detects faces at any angle
NEW Face Detection 2.0 – from any angle
The F50fd is the first FinePix model to feature the second
generation of Fujifilm's ultra-fast Face Detection technology. Face
Detection 2.0 offers dramatic performance and capability improvements
and adds innovative new features designed to turn everyday snaps into
stunning portraits.
Face Detection works by triangulating eyes
and mouth, using an algorithm to optimise focus, white balance and
exposure for up to ten faces in a single frame. A green square
surrounds the face of the primary subject on the camera's LCD screen,
whilst white squares identify up to nine other subjects. Movement
tracking keeps the camera 'locked on' to its subjects until they move
out of the picture. The technology works irrespective of the subject's
position in the frame, and is not confused by people wearing glasses.
Most
face detection systems work only when the subject (or subjects) are
looking directly at the camera, and most cannot detect a face if it is
at too steep an angle (such as when the person is resting their head on
someone's shoulder or lying down). Face Detection 2.0 can detect a
subject in full profile and at virtually any angle (through 270
degrees), even if they are moving within the frame. The FinePix F50fd
allows you to shoot natural portraits and capture the expressions of
friends and family, safe in the knowledge that the exposure, focus and
white balance will be perfectly optimised for the most important thing
in the frame; the faces of your subjects.
Photographing children who won't sit still has never been easier.
Conventional camera Fujifilm's automatic red eye removal
Say goodbye to red eye for good
The FinePix F50fd is among the first of Fujifilm's compact digital
cameras to offer automatic red eye removal, advancing the company's
acclaimed Face Detection system one step further. The FinePix Z100fd
uses the system to find and instantly correct any red eye from every
face in the frame.
The FinePix F50fd red eye removal system
is not confused by lips or red coloured jewellery, as some other
systems can be, as it works in tandem with Fujifilm's Face Detection
system to identify eyes and nothing else. Letting the camera do this
retouching is so much quicker and easier than struggling at home with a
paintbrush on a PC!
Conventional camera Fujifilm's Portrait Enhancer
Portrait Enhancer
The FinePix F50fd sees the debut of an exciting new feature designed
to transform a snapshot into an exceptional portrait. In Portrait
Enhancer mode the FinePix F50fd's powerful automatic retouching system
gives skin tones a silky-smooth texture and removes blemishes such as
spots and wrinkles. Once they've seen the beautiful skin tones produced
by the Portrait Enhancer, the loved ones in your life will never again
hide their faces whenever you get your camera out!
Conventional camera Fujifilm's Image Stabilisation
NEW Dual Image Stabilisation
As well as offering class-leading high ISO performance for avoiding
subject blur when shooting in low light, the FinePix F50fd also
features CCD-shift image stabilisation for avoiding the effects of
camera shake at longer shutter speeds. The combination of high ISO and
CCD-shift offers a complete system for avoiding blur caused by hand
shake or subject motion. Never before has a compact camera offered such
a comprehensive solution for avoiding blurred results whilst retaining
high-resolution photographic quality.
Basically the cameras
high sensitivity lets you use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action
in sharp detail, while the built in CCD shift image stabilisation
automatically compensates for camera shake.
Conventional camera Fujifilm's Intelligent Flash
Making light work of photography
For those occasions when flash is required, Fujifilm's Intelligent
Flash system sets the power output to achieve natural foreground
illumination with balanced background exposure.
Avoiding both
the messy background blur of 'slow-sync' flash, and the stark contrast
of conventional flash, Intelligent Flash results in visibly more
pleasing, natural looking photos.
For times when a decision
about lighting could mean a missed photo opportunity, the FinePix
F50fd's Natural Light plus Flash mode takes two photos in quick
succession, one with flash and one without, then displays them
side-by-side for instant comparison.
Easy to use features
The camera's 16 scene positions include beach, snow and fireworks for optimum photography, no matter what the event.
The
FinePix F50fd's 16 scene modes include 'beach', 'party' and 'fireworks'
for optimum photography, no matter what the event. A redesigned
graphical user interface and control layout ensure that the powerful
feature set remains easy to use even for the novice digital camera user.
Simply
select a Scene Position that suits your situation and the camera
automatically selects the appropriate shutter speed, exposure and white
balance to ensure that you get the most of your photography; more
stunning pictures, less hassle.
Aperture priority Shutter Priority
‘A’and ‘S’ modes
For the more advanced user the FinePix F50fd also features Aperture and Shutter Priority modes for total creative control.
‘A’
Aperture-priority and ‘S’ Shutter-priority auto exposure modes let you
explore your creativity. Selecting ‘A’ mode adds dimension to your
photo by increasing or decreasing the depth of field, while ‘S’ mode
allows you to maximise action shots by freezing motion or creating
motion blur.
Capture all the action
Continuous Shooting Mode
The F50fd allows you to shoot up to 12 frames in a burst* (at 5
frames per second), even if the subject is moving. This fantastic mode
therefore gives you 5 times the chance of capturing that one special
moment.
*at 3MP or lower
Movie Capture
When a still image isn't sufficient, the FinePix F50fd’s movie mode,
at 30 frames per second, captures movie clips with sound that are
limited in length only by the size of memory card used.
'Smile' Crop your images in camera
Playback Features, Zoom Up and Cropping
Thanks to Fujifilms proprietary Super CCD technology delivering a
stunning 12 megapixel resolution, you are able to crop and enlarge any
part of your captured image without experiencing any loss of quality.
Once
you’ve captured your group portrait you can use the handy ‘Zoom Up’
feature, which allows you to detect faces in playback mode so that you
can check them one by one and ensure that you have captured the image
as you intended it.
If you spy a priceless expression amongst
your group portrait that stands out from the crowd, then simply select
the built in ‘Cropping’ function, which will allow you to automatically
crop and save the selected portrait in the camera.
Micro Thumbnails
The 2.5 inch LCD screen allows you to view your images comfortably.
It displays your pictures in a number of alternative ways and enables
you to navigate up to 100 thumbnail images in a 10 x 10 array.
If
you enjoy blogging or sending images to friends via email then our
‘Blog’ mode is for you. Simply select this mode during playback and
your image is automatically resized and edited in your camera ready for
posting to the web,; saving you precious time by eliminating the need
to use a PC in order to optimise your images for web use.

Digital Camera - December 2007
90% Editor?s Choice
?The F50fd is easy to love and live with. Controls are quick and intuitive, and even the most cunning features work intuitively and effectively. Image quality is excellent in almost any shooting conditions, combining high levels of sharpness and with beautiful tone and colour, and a marked absence of aberrations?Overall, this is by far the best F-series Fujifilm camera to date."
Digital Photography Review - December 2007
Highly Recommended
"The F50fd is an excellent point and shoot camera that deserves a place near the top of its class... The sensor/processing unit of the F50fd is quite an achievement. From ISO 200-800 it puts most of the competition to shame, and even ISO 1600 can produce usable output within limits. Images show natural colours and good detail, there's no need to spend hours with your imaging to get pictures ready for print, they are perfect straight out the box...
In general, the F50fd is an enjoyable camera to use, the buttons are in the right places and the materials feel good in your hand. Even the plastic used on the back has a ?premium' feel to it. The latest generation of the Real Photo processor is a great performer, not only image quality wise but also in terms of speed and operation. Apart from the fairly long writing file times (especially in burst mode) the camera always feels snappy and responsive. Like most compact cameras the F50fd was not designed for action photography but it never lets you down when you need to take a quick shot."
Digital Camera Buyer November 2007
"For party and low-light shots, the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd is our winner for a variety of reasons. The Face Detection works very well and shots taken with the flash show a better balance between artificial and natural light than you will usually get. Where this camera really scores, though, is its handling and ease of use. When you?ve got a new feature like Face Detection, you want to know where it is, how to activate it and what to look for. On the Fujifilm it?s obvious? It?s the same with the natural light modes. These may be seen as small points individually, but they all add up to a camera that?s much simpler and quicker to use than the rest."

The Ten Best Compact digital cameras
Best Buy
?A sophisticated compact with a large screen, a huge 12 megapixels of resolution, image stabilisation, and even a function to hide blemishes and wrinkles ? what more could you want??
T3 - December 2007
Test Winner - 5 stars
"It's got a capable 12-meg sensor, ISO 6400 for those really dark shots and the latest face-detection tech. Wrinkles can be digitally polyfilla'd and red-eyes undemonised, it has aperture and shutter priority modes, and a blog mode to resize pics automatically. Best of all, it serves up detail and contrast with electrifying confidence and speed."
PCPlus - December 2007
Editor's Choice - 5 stars
"In the battle to produce low-noise images at higher ISO sensitivity ratings, the new Fujifilm F50fd wins out over the other two cameras on test here, thanks to a new generation of Fuji's Super CCD HR sensor. This is further enhanced by a ?Natural Light' mode, which breathes life into dimly lit scenes and is great for indoor shooting without a flash... Extending the shooting options beyond fully automatic ?programme' and scene modes, the camera also features aperture-priority and shutter-priority, each with one-third stop adjustment increments. Along with a wealth of other features, this makes the F50fd much less of a point-and-shoot camera than its competitors.
It's still great in fully automatic modes, but offers a far higher level of creative control when you want it. With a pin-sharp lens and beautiful overall image quality, this compact camera is an absolute steal at the price."
Personal Computer World - January 2008
4 stars
"The F50fd (fd standing for face detection), comes in at the top of Fujifilm's compact range and succeeds the F31fd. With a 12 megapixel CCD, it's a huge step up from its six-megapixel predecessor. Its metal-bodied case houses a 2.7in LCD and a 3x optical zoom lens. It feels very well built yet is extremely light and compact. In general operation, the F50fd is both fast and responsive, and it's quick to focus and take shots... Fujifilm cameras are well known for their high-ISO modes and the F50fd is no exception. With ISO 1600 available at full resolution and as high as ISO 6400 if you step down to three megapixels, it's a great camera for those who like to use natural light rather than flash."
CNET - November 2007
?Up to ten faces can be focused on and exposed for by Fujifilm?s ?Face Detection 2.0?. This is a step above other manufacturers' Face Detection systems, which cannot cope with profiles and are often confused by spectacles. The FinePix F50fd has one of the fastest Face Detection features we?ve used, snapping faces instantly and spotting profiles quickly in most conditions.?
PC Advisor - November 2007
"The Fujifilm FinePix F50fd is a compact camera that has all the latest features and takes great shots. Fujifilm offers flashier, more colourful models. But if you're more concerned with what your pictures look like, than what your camera looks like, then the Fujifilm FinePix F50fd is probably a good bet."
Computer Arts - September 2007
"Fujifilm is well known for cramming state-of-the-art technology into ultra-compact cameras, but this new model takes the biscuit. The FinePix F50fd features a whopping 12-megapixel Super CCD, automatic Face Detection technology (ideal for portraits) and image stabilisation."
CITY A.M - November 2007
"So which digital camera should you invest in this Christmas? This one would appeal to the snapper who likes plenty of settings to muck around with... One of the jewels in the camera's crown is its Face Detection technology - which focuses on your subject's features for extra definition. Used in conjunction with the portrait enhancer mode, your Facebook profile will have never looked better."
PC Advisor - February 2008
Awarded PC Advisor Gold award
"Fujifilm has another award-winner on its hands with the FinePix F50fd. This camera will please all, from beginners to more advanced photographers. With its magnificent new features, the Fujifilm offers up a real argument for upgrading a perfect good older camera to a newer and almost perfect model."
Daily Express - December 2007
"No need to look less than model-perfect in all your Christmas pictures with the new Fujifilm FinePix F50fd. The camera has a special portrait enhancer feature which will automatically retouch your pictures to remove blemishes and minor wrinkles and even out skin tone."
Macworld - February 2008
"Fujifilm has given the FinePix F50fd all the latest whizz-bang digital camera features too, including image stabilisation and, according to the company, a newer version of face-detection technology that can detect faces at up to a 90 degree angle, against 30 degrees with the company's older models... In our image quality tests, the F50fd earned the highest mark of any recent point-and-shoot for having the least distortion. The FinePix F50fd also received very high marks for sharpness."
What Mobile - March 2008
5 stars
"Stepping up to 12-megapixels hasn't harmed the image quality either. There's lashings of rich detail in images, strong colours and crisp exposure. Exposure priority modes give you plenty of creative freedom, and even if the autofocus occasionally fails to lock on in low light, the F50fd's overall performance is still excellent, especially considering its price."
The Independent - April 2008
"When it comes to bang for your buck, you can do no better than to lash out £190 for the F50fd," Michael Says. "Facial recognition and optical image stabilisation are present and correct, making short work of framing shots for even the most incompetent lensman, while a stonking 12-megapixel sensor says adios to tiny Facebook-style thumbnail snaps." Other highly acclaimed features include peerless sensor and processor and quality build. "This is simply the most complete compact camera money can buy."
